What can You Expect During Your Session?
You don't need any special preparation for massage. It is best not to shave right before a session as it is contraindicated for a therapist to work on open cuts, bumps or bruises. Make sure to report any of those issues to your therapist prior to getting massages. Before a massage therapy session starts, your massage therapist should ask you about any symptoms, your medical history and what you're hoping to get out of massage. Your massage therapist should explain the kind of massage and techniques he or she will use. In a typical massage therapy session, you undress. During a Sports Massage you may wear loose-fitting clothing. Undress only to the point that you're comfortable. You are always welcome to leave on socks, underwear, or a bra. Your therapist will discuss the massage with you before the start of the session at which time you can discuss parts of your body you do not want to have worked on i.e.: glutes, abdomen, head, face or feet. You generally lie on a table, either face up or face down into a specially designed pillow and cover yourself with a sheet and or blanket. You can also have a massage while sitting in a massage chair or office chair, fully clothed. Your massage therapist should perform an evaluation through touch to locate painful or tense areas and to determine how much pressure to apply. This evaluation may take place before the session has started or while addressing a specific area of concern.
